BEHIND THE EIGHT‑BALL (Linda Berman and Mary Ellen Siegel) Published in 1992 by social workers in New York, this book is written to assist problem gamblers and their families. Major sections discuss recognizing the problem gambler; the emotional factor; consequences of gambling too much; how compulsive gambling affects the family; techniques of survival and confrontations; and the recovery phase and stages. 285 pages, paperbound. THE CHASE (Henry Lesieur) Revised from a 1977 study, this classic work takes an in‑depth look at compulsive gamblers, how they got that way, what they were like and how they were helped by Gamblers Anonymous. 323 pages, hardbound.

COMPULSIVE GAMBLING: THEORY, RESEARCH, PRACTICE (Howard Shaffer, Sharon Stein, Blase Gamblion, Thomas Cummings) Published in 1989, this book will help the beginning or serious researcher understand the theories of compulsive gambling; models of treatment for problem gamblers; inpatient treatment; clinical observations; and public policy implications. Also examines teenage gambling and the plight of children of problem gamblers. 350 pages; hardbound.

 COUNSELING PROBLEM GAMBLERS: A SELF-REGULATION MANUAL FOR INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY THERAPY. By Joseph W. Ciarrocci (San Diego, CA, Adademic Press) is a new well presented book on treatment.  He brings together Motivational Enhancement and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies in a description of treatment.

HANDBOOK OF PATHOLOGICAL GAMBLING (Thomas Galski, Editor) Ten major sections cover the diagnosis and scope of pathological gambling; salient personality variables; a review of the literature of the psychodynamics of pathological gambling; the family dynamics; crime; physiological determinants; psychological testing; research; treatment; a general theory of addictions, and forensic issues. Written for the researcher and the therapist.

LOSING YOUR SHIRT (Mary Heinemann) Written by one of the national experts in the field of treating compulsive gamblers, this 1992 work focuses on recovery techniques for problem gamblers and their families. One of the best publications for working with families of compulsive gamblers. 190 pages, paperbound. Available from Gamblers Book Club and CompuCare.

PATHOLOGICAL GAMBLING: CONCEPTUAL, DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT ISSUES (Martin C. McGurrin) Part of the Professional Resource Press' Practitioner's Resource Series, Dr. McGurrin takes readers through a brief historical overview of compulsive gambling, illustrative case studies, the DSM criterion, treatment issues and the role of the family in cause and treatment of pathological gambling. 72 pages, paperbound. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GAMBLING (Edmund Bergler) Originally published in 1957, this book remains a valid resource for anyone trying to understand the mind of the gambler; the motivations, various types of players, and the mysterious thrill gambling provides. 244 pages, hardbound.

SHARING RECOVERY THROUGH GAMBLERS ANONYMOUS Referred to as the G. A. Big Book, this publication is a collection of personal remembrances to assist gamblers in their recovery. 241 pages, paperbound. Available from Gamblers Anonymous.

WHEN LUCK RUNS OUT (Robert Custer and Harry Milt) This 1985 book remains the definitive work on compulsive gambling. Dr. Robert Custer, widely acknowledged as the pioneer of compulsive gambling treatment, takes the reader through understanding compulsive gambling, the roots of the disease, phases in the life of the compulsive gambler, recognizing and diagnosing the compulsive gambler and treatment issues. WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN: PROBLEM GAMBLING IN AMERICA. By Rachel A. Volberg (2001). New York: Century Foundation Press. This is a researched based book on Problem Gambling by one of the leaders in research.

WHEN THE STAKES ARE TOO HIGH (Linda Allison) This 1991 book is one of the few publications written by the wife of a compulsive gambler and takes the reader through a series of stories of the impact compulsive gambling had on family life. 107 pages. Abbey Press.
